Obtaining Independent Legal Advice
Being comfortable with your choices and wording
You might be asking yourself, Did I make the right choice? Is this fair? Did I give too much?
It is completely normal to feel some doubt or “settler’s remorse” after mediation, if that was the route you chose. Try not to dwell on it or rush into renegotiating. Remember, nothing is final until you sign your Separation Agreement. It's wise to seek advice before you renege on your deal. You still have the chance to get legal advice, if you wish.
Independent legal advice
We strongly recommend getting Independent Legal Advice before you sign your agreement. A lawyer can review your Separation Agreement and supporting documents to make sure everything is fair, clear, and enforceable.
The agreement is not binding until you sign it. This gives you time to meet with a lawyer, ask questions, and fully understand the terms. Once you do sign, it becomes a legally binding agreement.
Your lawyer will also sign the agreement to confirm that they reviewed it with you and explained its meaning. This adds an extra layer of strength and reliability moving forward.
Making amendments
You and your lawyer can make changes directly in Divii. It is common to correct spelling errors, adjust wording, or update clauses. You can make these changes yourself or ask your lawyer to do it using the Editor.
We recommend inviting your lawyer into Divii so they can collaborate with your spouse and their lawyer, with all changes tracked in one place.
If you are proposing changes that affect the actual terms of the agreement, consider discussing them together or booking a short mediation session. This can help you work through the changes and keep moving forward smoothly.
