Creating a New Will After Your Separation

Your will is void

Now that you have separated, you will need to create a new will that is dated after the date of your Separation Agreement. Ensure that your lawyer or notary is made aware of your Separation Agreement and if you are married, your divorce plans.

You may designate new beneficiaries of your estate.

You may name new beneficiaries

Your life insurance, RRSPs, Pensions, CPP, and other financial instruments will allow you to name new beneficiaries.

For Life Insurance, you may have agreed to hold a certain amount of insurance to secure support, so ensure that you make your insurance broker aware of this obligation.
