How to Create a Parenting Time Schedule

For a view on where to find the Parenting Time Planner on the left navigation panel, please refer to The Parenting Time Planner in Divii's Features and Tools.

Understanding the Parenting Time Planner

Divii tries to help make creating a successful parenting schedule as clear and simple as possible. The parenting time planner, located on the left navigation panel, offers templates designed for the most common parenting arrangements. These pre-built schedules are popular because they tend to work well for most family circumstances.

Exploring template options vs. custom schedules

When reviewing the available template options, you'll find the most popular schedules. However, if these standard arrangements don't meet your specific needs, you have the flexibility to create something more tailored to your situation. Simply press the reset button to begin building your own custom schedule from scratch.

Building your custom parenting schedule

Adding time blocks

The process of creating your schedule from scratch begins with adding time blocks for each parent. Start by specifying the first block of parenting time. For example, you might arrange for Parent A to have parenting time from Sunday at 3 p.m. after school until Wednesday at 3 p.m., when Parent B will pick up your child at school.

Adding subsequent time blocks

Once you've established the first time block, you can add the next one. This can be done by double-clicking directly on the calendar. In this example, Parent B would then have parenting time from Wednesday at 3 p.m. until Sunday at 3 p.m., when Parent B will pick up your child.

Managing schedule details and modifications

Viewing and editing time blocks

The system provides clear visibility into your schedule arrangements. You can view the complete details at the bottom of the calendar display, or make quick amendments by double-clicking any time block to access the popup editing box.

The default two-week rotation schedule in Divii

Currently, Divii operates on a two-week rotation schedule. If your family requires a different rotation pattern, you can work around this structure by recreating your visual schedule and attaching it to your agreement as a custom arrangement.

The general rule of successful parenting schedules

No universal "best" schedule

It's important to understand that, outside of circumstances where parenting time could be harmful to the child, there's no universally "right" or "best" schedule. The key to success lies not in finding the perfect arrangement, but in creating one that works for your specific family dynamic.

Key components of a successful parenting arrangement

The most successful parenting arrangements share several key components:

  • Parents who maintain their own well-being

  • Low-conflict co-parenting relationships

  • Quality time for children with both parents

  • Reasonable consistency and stability

When these elements are present, virtually any agreed-upon schedule can work effectively for your family.

Making your schedule work

Rather than spending excessive time searching for the perfect schedule, focus on agreeing to an arrangement that will generally work for your family. Make it right for both parents and, most importantly, make it right for your children.

When and how to make adjustments

The optimal time for schedule modifications is when family life feels calm and peaceful. During these stable periods, you can thoughtfully assess what's working well and what might need adjustment, ensuring your parenting plan continues to serve your family's evolving needs.
